Hair and Beauty Youth Empowerment Programme proudly sponsored by Afrika Tikkun is set to alleviate the unemployment rate amongst the youth in Diepsloot.
Located at Extension 6 in the same premises as Afrika Tikkun- the training only takes three months for each student to complete and no payments are required. The aim of the programme is to provide the youth in the township with skills that will at the later stage help them in finding employment or in opening their own businesses. The training started in October 2018 with the first group which ended January 2019 and the second group started February this year to end in the last week of May.
Speaking to Township News facilitator Bonisiwe Kumalo said that the students are responding well to the programme and that they do show commitment to it.

Trust Dlamini, the 21-year-old guy currently staying at Extension 5 started his training on the 13th of February this year. To him being a male in the beauty industry proved to be challenging yet fun because he got to learn all aspects within the speculated time. ‘’ It is very nice being in the industry surrounded by females and that motivates me a lot to do well and to represent all males who fear to embark on this journey’’. Sibusisiwe Mkhwanazi, a 23-year-old lady from Extension 6 said that she started her training in the 3rd week of February. She now obtained her skills in the hair industry and she has been employed by Amajay Beauty saloon based in Bambanani Mall. Mkhwanazi said that she had an interesting journey and that she is been motivated to start her own business. ‘’ My aim is to excel in the industry and build my own company that will help in creating more employment and in uplifting the community’’.
