South Africa’s population increases to 58.78m


    Statisticians-General Risenga Maluleke released the mid-year population statistics on Monday.

    According to the report, the population has increased to 58.78 million people in 2019, with Gauteng recording the largest share of the country’s population. The report showed that the Northern Cape maintained its status as the province with the lowest population in the country, with a population estimated at 1.26 million.

    What also came out interestingly is that approximately 51.2% of the population is female – 30 million South Africans are women.

    Maluleke reported that black South Africans have a more youthful population compared to other race groups.

    According to the report, about 28.8% of the population is younger than 15 years.
