The Zandspruit Men’s Forum celebrated National Women’s Day on Friday, 9 August, at Mashele’s Soup Kitchen in Ext 16 of Ward 114, Honeydew.
The purpose of the event was to demonstrate love and respect for the women in the community and make a humble but symbolically significant contribution to their welfare. The celebrations organised on the day included some entertainment and refreshments, but the main purpose was to launch the Zandspruit Women’s Forum. Some social problems such as crime, domestic violence, women and child abuse were also addressed on the day.
Chairman of the Zandspruit Men’s Forum, Alphios Mashile said, “We closed the day with a big lunch that was substantially prepared, cooked and served by the men for almost 70 women and 20 men.”
Entertainment on the day was provided by the Forum’s Lex Leo, who was very warmly received and asked many times to come back. Speakers from the community, government and churches gave brief but moving speeches especially about women. It was decided that the Women’s Forum will be launched next Saturday, 17 August and the social issues will be on an agenda of common consultation and action with the Men’s Forum.
