PROTEST ACTION ARISE IN KYASAND AS INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS UNITE.

    Kyasand – Community members from informal settlements in Kya Sands, Thabo Mbeki, Msawawa, Lion Park, Diepsloot ext 12, 13, Drammond and Malatjie took to the streets in the early hours of the morning on Friday 14th June 2019.

    Residents were burning tyres and blocked roads with rocks on Bernie Street at River road in Kya Sands.
    Residents walked from Kya Sand using Malibongwe Drive Road (17km) all the way to Malatjie Informal settlement next to Lanseria International Airport to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Premier of Gauteng David Makhura. In the memorandum they said they need proper sanitation in all informal settlements, they demand electricity as soon as possible, Department of Water must fix all taps that are leaking, Department of Labour and Home Affairs must do inspection in all companies around Strydom Park, Kya Sand and Lanseria Park ” Billy Modikwe added that all these companies must make sure that the people that they employ must have proper documentation and must be South African citizens.

    Billy Lekgotla Modikwe who is the community leader said “they have been promised RDP houses since 2015, no service delivery in this areas, they demand, water, Electricity, Jobs and houses,” Billy also highlighted that they are not happy with they are treated in informal settlements.

    Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) together with the South African Police Services (SAPS) were monitoring the situation. Memorandum of demands was received by Magret Tleyane whose the Director for Service Delivery in the Office of the premier in Gauteng, the premier didn’t make it, to accept the memorandum, Tleyane promised the residents that she will give the Premier the memorandum and they will respond to their grievance after seven workings.
