The minister of Human Settlement Lindiwe Sisulu has urged the City of Johannesburg to move with speed in identifying who authorised the demolition of houses in Alexandra and determine whether the process was done within the law.
It reported that at least 80 houses were destroyed on Friday by the Red Ants.
Mayor Herman Mashaba expressed his disappointment with the demolitions and says he was not informed about plans to evict and demolish the structures.
“I’m actually quite angry. Because as the City of Johannesburg, we have a motion brought in by the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) when it took over and which we all supported that we cannot use the Red Ants for evictions, firstly. Secondly, I have made it clear with invaders platforms and all the officials that all the evictions must be brought to my attention. Evictions have got political implications,” defends Mashaba.
However, she said correct procedures were not followed when the houses were removed.
The Spokesperson of Human Settlement department Mogomotsi Mogodiri said the department would work with all stakeholders to ensure that stability was restored in the area.
“We want the City of Johannesburg to move with speed to ensure the investigation is completed. If there is any wrongdoing, consequence management must take place.”
