The metro police in Johannesburg Metro were monitoring a community protest on Malibongwe Drive near Lanseria Airport, north-west of the city on Monday. The protest affected several roads in the area, including the one leading to the airport. Community members took the streets on Monday morning, barricading roads with burning tyres and rocks.
The community took to the streets to protests against the removal of the illegal connections at Thabo Mbeki informal settlement. JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says while they managed to clear the road, the protestors subsequently returned.
Minnaar says the motorist should drive with caution as there no alternative routes are going into the area.
“There are still ongoing protests along Malibongwe near the N14. Officers managed to clear the road but the protestors have now come back to the road with rocks and burning tyres.
“Motorists should drive with caution when approaching the Lanseria Airport. Officers will have to clear the road again.”
