ALEX – The biting winter may be a bit more bearable for some of the residents of Grenville following a blanket donation.

A gracious donation from Fathers from the Bryanston Methodist Church (FBM) will see more than 150 residents of Grenville, a stone’s throw from Alexandra, survive this year’s biting winter cold.

The 150 blankets were handed over to Alex NPO, Blessed is the Hand that Gives (BHG) to distribute to those in need in the area.Founder of the Alex 10th Avenue NPO Phillemon Matome, who has a long history of philanthropy in the township, said he was grateful for the donation which he hopes will go a long way towards warding off the biting cold that has just set in.

“I would like to pay my special gratitude to the FBM for handing over the blankets to me to deliver to the poor community… May they be blessed for their generosity,” Matome said after handing over the blankets.

Seeing that there were more people in need than anticipated who came to the collection spot, Matome apologised to them and said he will be back when he next receives more items to handover.

Recipients of the blankets had earlier been registered with community leaders in the settlement but when word got around about the blanket delivery, more people came in the hope they too would be able to receive the blankets. “This illustrates just how desperate the situation is within our less fortunate communities and the need for more assistance,” he said.
