JOHANNESBURG – An eNCA exposé has led to the destruction of more than two tons of illegally imported chloroquine.

It was reported in May that about R20-million worth of the anti-malarial medicine was slipped through customs in Johannesburg.

The 2.5-tons of chloroquine arrived in South Africa several months ago.

The drug was being touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19 but, the importer – a company called Balmoral Norse – was not licenced to import the medication.

Company director, Dave Avnit, told the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority the drugs were in transit but the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority rejected this.

The destruction of the medication means it can no longer make it onto local pharmacy shelves and the hunt is on for the culprits, who either used fraudulent documents or paid off customs officials to get the consignment into the country.
