Government to amend Domestic Violence Act to protect victims

Investment and growth require a safe, stable and crime-free environment.

That’s the word from President Cyril Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa said over the last six months, communities have come together to end the crisis of gender-based violence.

“Through building social compacts across society to fight this scourge we will be able to achieve much more.

“But it is only the beginning of the struggle,” he said.

Ramaphosa said that the Domestic Violence Act will be amended to better protect victims in violent domestic relationship.

He also announced that the Sexual Offences Act will be amended to broaden the categories of sex offenders whose names must be included in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

“We will pass a law to tighten bail and sentencing condition in cases that involve gender-based violence ,” Ramaphosa said.
