JOHANNESBURG – South Africa is facing a dire shortage of organ donations.
Just one person can save the lives of seven others.
August is National Organ Donor Awareness month and the Organ Donor Foundation is appealing to all South Africans to register as donors. The Organ Donor Foundation says a lack of education and awareness are the main reasons people aren’t becoming organ donors.
“There is a very critical shortage in South Africa at the moment,” said foundation spokesperson Emlynn Royine. “Approximately 4,300 are on the waiting list for organs.
“Sadly, only 600 of those people will receive a transplant every year.”
The Organ Donor Foundation says it takes about two minutes to register as a donor.
