JOHANNESBURG – Food supply is crucial during the lockdown.
At the heart of all this are farmers, feeding an anxious nation.
But small-scale farmers in KwaZulu-Natal say the lockdown has affected their businesses negatively.
With the limited movement of people, some small scale farmers don’t have customers.
Some are unable to buy crucial chemicals for their vegetables because these weren’t classified as essential products.
Provincial authorities are calling on small-scale farmers to apply for the R1.2-billion in relief funding announced by government.
But the farmers are trying all means to avert another looming crisis – job losses.
They’re hoping the worst of the lockdown will be over soon.
