COVID-19: Global cases top five million

Cuban Health Specialists arrive in South Africa to support efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19. The arrival of the 217 Cuban Health Specialists follows a request made by HE President Cyril Ramaphosa to HE President Díaz Canel Bermúdez of Cuba. The group consists of the following; •  experts in the fields of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health; • family physicians to guide interventions through door-to-door testing and to assist local health workers in health promotion and disease surveillance at the community level; • healthcare technology engineers to assist in maintaining the inventory, deployment and repair of aged medical equipment; and • experts to provide technical assistance working with local experts. JOHANNESBURG – Global coronavirus cases are now over five million.

Over 332,000 deaths have also been recorded.

Despite the high number of cases several countries are either planning to or have already eased lockdown restrictions.

South Africa’s COVID-19 death toll has risen by 30 bringing the death toll to 369.The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in SA is 19,137.

The Health Department says a total of 525, 433 tests have been conducted to date with 18, 572 tests done in the past 24 hours.

The Western Cape leads with 235 fatalities followed by the Eastern Cape (50), KwaZulu Natal (46) and Gauteng (27).

Mpumalanga is the only province in South Africa yet to record a COVID-19 related death.
