JOHANNESBURG – The reopening of schools is being discussed by the highest authorities.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) will once again consider the government’s stance on the matter.
This follows recent comments by senior WHO official Dr Mike Ryan and teacher unions calling for schools to close.
Ramaphosa was answering questions during a virtual Imbizo on Wednesday night.
“Opening schools is not wise, it’s now a matter of great debate in our country,” he said.
“Teachers unions have come forward to say their own lived experience is that many teachers are getting infected and a number of learners and they are proposing they should close schools.
“It’s a matter that is being debated and being discussed with the respective organisations and it will be given consideration too by the National Coronavirus Command Council as well.”
