Beauty queen lends a helping hand in a fight against hunger in Setswetla Informal Settlements

Tshepo Makupu says working with communities teaches her the realities faced by different residents.

Miss Eagle South Africa 2019 Tshepo Makupu (27) collaborated with Food for Life South Africa to distribute food parcels to the community of Setswetla Informal Settlement, Alexandra.

The food parcel distribution project spearheaded by Food for Life is aimed at eradicating hunger in poor and disadvantaged communities all over the country.

Speaking to Alex News after the food parcels handover, Makupu, who was crowned Miss Eagle SA in December last year, said she has been part of the mass feeding project with the organisation since last year, months before she the won the competition.

“I’ve been part of Food for Life mass feeding scheme for the whole of last year. Once a month, we have a feeding scheme project like this in which we go to communities to feed people. Today’s event is a continuation of what I’ve been doing since last year,” she said.

“I love being part of the initiative because you will never know when people last had their last plate of food. It makes me very proud to be part of an initiative like this one.”

Chairperson of Food for Life in Sandton branch Angie Rambaran said their objective is to eradicate hunger and make Alexandra Township a hunger-free zone, adding that they are grateful to work with Makupu.

“We are grateful to have people like Tshepo coming on board and lending a helping hand. The residents of Alexandra have welcomed Food for Life with open arms and they always look forward to having us here every month,” she said.
