Alex FM is back on air with the help of their Sandton neighbours

The looted Alex FM community radio station has returned to the airwaves but is broadcasting from Sandton.

The community continues to look out for its own during this uncertain time.

Sandton radio station LM Radio, based in Rivonia, has extended a helping hand to Alex FM. In a statement, Alex FM station manager Takalane Nemangowe confirmed that the station had been broken into, with broadcast equipment worth more than R5 million looted in the early hours of July 13.

Without any idea of what would become of the community station, LM Radio reached out to provide a helping hand. With the help of equipment donations and the LM Radio broadcast space, Alex FM is now back on the air.

According to a post on the Alex FM Facebook page, the station was delighted to be back on air, broadcasting from LM Radio studios and ‘not from our looted and destroyed studios in Alexandra anymore’. According to LM Radio Group CEO Lyndon Johnstone, as ‘radio people’, they understand the importance of working together to keep radio strong. “We were shocked that an entity of the community, for the community could be destroyed in this manner – we just had to help,” said Johnstone.

Other radio stations have also pledged their support to Alex FM.
