2,000 South African kids in Chinese vaccine trials

2,000 South African children and adolescents aged between six months and 17 years will receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

Beginning on Friday, the youngsters will receive the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine as part of its Phase III trials.

The first child will be vaccinated at the MeCRU Clinical Research Unit based at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Pretoria.

The trial has been approved by South African drugs regulator SAHPRA, as well as the World Health Organization.

Other than the 2,000 in South Africa, a total of 12,000 other children from Kenya, Chile, the Philippines, and Malaysia are taking part in the global trial.

“The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of two doses of CoronaVac against confirmed symptomatic Covid-19 cases in children and adolescents,” Sinovac said in a joint statement with local partner Numolux on Thursday.

“Efficacy will also be evaluated against hospitalization and severe Covid-19.”
