JOHANNESBURG – Small businesses are feeling the heat following protests in Soweto.

On Tuesday, residents of Ward 37 took to the streets, saying Mayor Geoff Makhubo and his advisors have failed to come up with solutions to their grievances.

It follows earlier protests over a lack of service delivery, resulting in demands for the councillor to resign.

Calm has returned while protesters hold a strategic meeting.

But, small businesses are counting their losses. Lebo Mahlaba owns a car wash and says there were no customers while the community was protesting.

He wasn’t the only one feeling the pinch. One man was unable to open his business on time while another had to try and make do without key ingredients.

While these small business owners suffer, ward councillor Zodwa Nxumalo has called the protests “pure factionalism”, saying she’s fulfilled her mandate.
