The Diepsloot police are celebrating success after putting an alleged smash-and-grab robber behind bars on 1 March.
Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Constable Moyahabo Jenny Morata said, “The suspect was caught shortly after he reportedly stole cell phones and handbags from someone who was waiting at the R511 intersection near Diepsloot Ext 2, which is a smash-and-grab hotspot. He was caught a few kilometres from the R511 road.”
Morata said that the suspect was arrested by the Station Commander Brigadier Koena Moichela.
“The cellphone stolen from the complainant’s car was not recovered, but he confessed that he gave it to his friend to sell it. His friend is still at large,” said Morata.
She added that a smash-and-grab awareness campaign was also conducted on the same day. “We appeal to the motorists not to drive around with valuables displayed on their car seats. Items like cell phones, wallets, handbags and cash attract criminals.
“The Diepsloot police are currently reviewing other smash-and-grab cases, with assistance from other potential witnesses and forensic eider, the suspect could be linked with other similar incidents.”
The suspect is expected to be charged with theft out of a motor vehicle and will appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
